ALBUM REVIEW: SOEN- MEMORIAL

El primero de septiembre del año 2023, SOEN lanza su disco Memorial, el cual ya había sido anunciado tras la liberación del primer sencillo “Unbreakable“. Esta canción venía cargada de alta emotividad para el público chileno ya que el videoclip fue grabado en nuestro país en la presentación de los suecos en la primera versión del festival progresivo Cl Prog, realizada en el Teatro Caupolicán.
Al liberar el single, Martín López comenta: “Es una canción sobre cómo te limitas a ti mismo como ser humano, al creer ciegamente en algo“. Y es que a simples y a primeras pareciera ser una canción más de metal moderno melódico creada para ser coreada en los espectáculos en vivo hasta que escuchas con detención las letras que reza la pulcra voz de Joel Ekelöf en donde el mensaje trasciende mucho más allá de lo que aparenta. La batería tiene cambios potentes y la guitarra de Cody Ford se luce en un solo magnífico, haciendo de esta canción una joyita de esas que debes escuchar más de una vez para que sea entendida en su totalidad.
En julio estrenaron el videoclip de “Memorial“, con sonidos anticipados de guerra y una voz más rasgada, el track luce una clara tendencia a la continuidad del trabajo que hizo Imperial en cuanto a la demostración anti guerra y política. Con una alta carga emocional, el apoyo audiovisual le añade aún más poder gracias a las imágenes de los integrantes de manera traslúcida entre cuadros de una guerra en donde el mismo pueblo de Oleksii “Zlatoyar” Kobel (ex bajista) se ha visto afectado.
Así es como al poco tiempo cae “Violence” el 23 de agosto del 2023 para dejar el corazón apretado y los oídos extenuados de lo que vendría siendo uno de los mejores temas del álbum. Con una potencia soberana en la composición musical y una crudeza escalofriante en las líricas, esta canción es una demostración del crecimiento que el quinteto a tenido a través de los años.
Es que el coro lo dice todo… y más: “Never gonna be a God, Forcing on us hateful love. You took away the pride in my life With a little bit of violence“. Un grito desesperado por ayuda que se convierte en auxilios sofocados en el pasado que dejan el letargo amargo e ingrato del desamor y la violencia misma. Un mar de lágrimas no lloradas que consumen el alma convirtiéndola en un monstruo capaz de devorar incluso a aquellos que demuestren algo de afecto.
Y este es el juego ganador de Soen, pues la emotividad es su cobija, su comida preferida y su propia huella digital. Más que música, es una constante nostalgia sinfónica de sensibilidad técnicamente bien ejecutada.
A cuatro días del estreno de Memorial, Soen presenta “Hollowed“; la gran sorpresa del larga duración ya que cuenta con la colaboración de la cantante italiana Elisa Toffoli.
Esta intensa balada pensada para que las lágrimas recorran pacíficas el camino del recuerdo, habla de lo difícil que es despegarse de lo que alguna fue lo amado. Dejar ir cuando el corazón ya no late en sintonía y las canciones una vez felices, ahora se transforman en acordes menores de color opacado.
Y es que en la tristeza se encuentra la belleza del sonido de Soen. Es aquella llama en el medio de aguas turbulentas que lucha por sobrevivir.
El último sencillo que se acompañó audiovisualmente fue “Incendiary” el cual fue realizado por el artista de tatuajes Victor Portugal. Aquí nuevamente aparece el poder avasallador de las guitarras y las percusiones ensordecedoras de Lopez. Un himno a mantener la unidad que es la mayor arma para combatir las injusticias que sobre lleva el mundo. Es una mezcla entre resiliencia y rencor, como la vida misma. Una serenata al hastío del poder y un coqueteo a luchar contra aquello que injustamente separa a la humanidad.
“Sincere“, “Fortress” y “Tragedian” siguen la misma línea estructural que el resto de las canciones y se asemejan bastante a lo que se venía escuchando en su disco anterior. Un pivoteo entre la energía del desahogo y la melancolía del desaliento, con letras tan profundas que calan hondo a quien se detiene a escucharlas con atención.
Ciertamente “A veces solo intentarlo no es suficiente“, pero podemos seguir de pie aunque un huracán intente derribarnos, pues de eso se trata la vida misma, de que los pequeños momentos de felicidad que encontramos gratis sean apreciados y pasen a ser el pilar que nos mantenga erguidos sin bajar los brazos frente a la adversidad.
Y no es que haya olvidado mencionar a “Bigotes“ Lars Enok Åhlund, guitarrista y tecladista de la agrupación, pero es que la creación del más oscuro, triste y nostálgico tema de todo el disco nace desde su manos, recuerdos y propios dolores. “Vitals“, con el hermoso sonido entregado por el piano de cola, transparenta aquel dolor agónico, sombrío e intenso que hace cuestionarse las razones para seguir avanzando un camino en el cual ya se ha perdido todo. Aquel desconsuelo que te hace desear dejarte ir, soltar y volar a un lugar en donde ya nada pueda dañarte.
En donde finalmente, dejes de sentir.

On September 1, 2023, SOEN released their disc Memorial, which had already been announced after the release of the first single “Unbreakable“. This song was loaded with high emotion for the Chilean public since the video clip was recorded in our country in the presentation of the Swedes in the first version of the progressive festival Cl Prog, held at the Caupolicán Theater.
Upon releasing the single, Martin Lopez comments: “It’s a song about how you limit yourself as a human being by blindly believing in something.“And at first glance it seems to be just another melodic modern metal song created to be sung at live shows until you listen carefully to the lyrics spoken by the neat voice of Joel Ekelöf where the message transcends far beyond what it appears. The drums have powerful changes and the guitar Cody Ford shines in a magnificent solo, making this song one of those gems that you must listen to more than once to be fully understood.
In July they released the video clip for “Memorial“, with anticipated sounds of war and a more raspy voice, the track shows a clear tendency towards the continuity of the work that Imperial did in terms of the anti-war and political demonstration. With a high emotional charge, the audiovisual support adds even more power thanks to the images of the members in a translucent way between scenes of a war where the same people of Oleksii “Zlatoyar” Kobel (ex-bassist) has been affected.
This is how after a short time it falls “Violence” on August 23, 2023 to leave the heart tight and the ears exhausted by what would become one of the best songs on the album. With sovereign power in the musical composition and a chilling rawness in the lyrics, this song is a demonstration of the growth that the quintet has had over the years.
The chorus says it all… and more: “Never gonna be a God, Forcing on us hateful love. You took away the pride in my life With a little bit of violence“. A desperate cry for help that becomes suffocated aid in the past that leaves the bitter and thankless lethargy of heartbreak and violence itself. A sea of uncried tears that consume the soul, turning it into a monster capable of devouring even those who show some affection.
And this is the winning game Soen, because emotionality is their blanket, their favorite food and their own digital footprint. More than music, it is a constant symphonic nostalgia of technically well-executed sensitivity.
Four days before the premiere of Memorial, Soen presents “Hollowed“; the big surprise of the full-length since it has the collaboration of the Italian singer Elisa Toffoli. This intense ballad, designed to make tears peacefully travel down the path of memory, speaks of how difficult it is to let go of what was once loved. Letting go when the heart no longer beats in tune and the once happy songs now transform into minor chords of dull color.
And in sadness lies the beauty of the sound of Soen. It is that flame in the midst of turbulent waters that fights to survive.
The last single was “Incendiary” which was done by tattoo artist Victor Portugal. Here again the overwhelming power of Lopez’s guitars and deafening percussion appears. An anthem to maintain unity, which is the greatest weapon to combat the injustices that the world suffers. It is a mix between resilience and resentment, like life itself. A serenade to the boredom of power and a flirtation with fighting against that which unjustly separates humanity.
“Sincere“, “Fortress” and “Tragedy” follows the same structural line as the rest of the songs and are quite similar to what was heard on their previous album. A pivot between the energy of relief and the melancholy of discouragement, with lyrics so deep that they penetrate deeply whoever stops to listen to them carefully.
Certainly “Sometimes to try is not enough“, but we can continue standing still even if a hurricane tries to knock us down, because that is what life itself is about, just small moments of happiness that we find for free and we appreciated until they become the pillar that keeps us upright without lowering our arms in the face of adversity.
And it’s not that I forgot to mention “Bigotes” Lars Enok Åhlund, guitarist and keyboardist of the group, but the creation of the darkest, saddest and nostalgic track of the entire album comes from his hands, memories and own pain. “Vitals“, with the beautiful sound delivered by the grand piano, reveals that agonizing, gloomy and intense pain that makes you question the reasons for continuing to advance along a path in which everything has already been lost. That heartbreak that makes you want to let go, leave and fly to a place where nothing can harm you anymore.
